In 1803, president Thomas Jefferson wrote of his personal secretary and soon-to-be leader of a dangerous exploration team:
“Of courage undaunted, possessing a firmness & perseverance of purpose which nothing but impossibilities could divert from it’s direction, careful as a father of those committed to his charge, yet steady in the maintenance of order & discipline…”
He was writing about his selection of Captain Meriwether Lewis, as the leader of an expedition charged with exploring the uncharted territory recently acquired as part of his “Louisiana Purchase”. Traveling only by boat and on foot, with no means of communication other than “sending a few expedition members back”, Captain Lewis’ Corps of Discovery was comprised of 35 men who set off from St. Louis, through unknown territory, for an unknown amount of time, and along a route of unknown length. After more than a year without word from the expedition, they were feared dead, until they miraculously reappeared in St. Louis after more than 28 months and 7,400 miles.
In his personal journal, Captain Lewis explains the long period of silence from his expedition:
“…sending three men back might possibly discourage those who would in such case remain…all [the men] appear perfectly to have made up their minds to succeed in the expedition or purish [sic] in the attempt. We all believe that we are now about to enter on the most perilous and difficult part of our voyage, yet I see no one repining; all appear ready to met [sic] those difficulties which wait us with resolution and becoming fortitude.”
Captain Lewis knew that the best and possibly the only way to complete his nearly impossible mission, was to break from his promised communication back to president Jefferson, and instead keep his surging team together. They would triumph or they would die together.
